Having been a top Country in Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel for 2022, and regularly featuring again in a variety of ‘Top Places’ lists (top places to visit in Africa, top lakes of the world, etc.), Malawi has been nominated for the most Desirable Emerging Destination in the 2023 Wanderlust Reader Travel Awards!

Malawi is emerging as a sought-after travel destination for several compelling reasons. Firstly, the country is blessed with breathtaking natural beauty, including the stunning Lake Malawi, which spans over 580 kilometers and offers pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and abundant marine life. This makes it an ideal spot for water sports, snorkelling, and diving. Moreover, Malawi is home to diverse landscapes, from lush forests and rolling hills to dramatic mountains and wildlife-rich national parks. Visitors can explore places like Nyika National Park, Liwonde National Park, and Majete Wildlife Reserve, where they can witness an impressive array of animals, including elephants, lions, and more of the big five.

In addition to its natural wonders, Malawi boasts a rich cultural heritage that captivates travellers. The welcoming people of Malawi are proud of their traditions and has earned the country it’s slogan of ‘the Warm Heart of Africa.’ Malawi’s culture is intertwined in everything from vibrant dances to handicrafts. Exploring the local markets and engaging with the local communities provides visitors with a deeper understanding of Malawi’s culture.

Furthermore, Malawi’s commitment to sustainable tourism practices is another reason for its emergence as a desirable destination. The country has implemented various initiatives to protect its natural resources and promote responsible tourism. Community-based tourism projects have been developed, allowing visitors to interact with local communities, support local businesses, and contribute to the well-being of the people.

Lastly, the relative off-the-beaten-path nature of Malawi adds to its allure. While it may not be as well-known as some of its neighbouring countries, this hidden gem offers a more authentic and intimate travel experience. The absence of large crowds allows visitors to truly connect with the natural surroundings and immerse themselves in the local culture. It comes as no surprise that Malawi earns this prestigious nomination.
